Lucas Montpart – Third Prize<\/span><\/p>\n

Celebrating My 21st Birthday With My Dead Brothers<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Up the year I go,<\/span><\/p>\n

flights of stairs<\/span><\/p>\n

where I skip steps,<\/span><\/p>\n

not looking down.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I knock on my oldest brother\u2019s<\/span><\/p>\n

door, suggest the bar,<\/span><\/p>\n

and off his xanny-laced haze,<\/span><\/p>\n

he says <\/span>Yeah<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My middle brother joins,<\/span><\/p>\n

bringing along his girl,<\/span><\/p>\n

a deadbeat enabler,<\/span><\/p>\n

stories with holes<\/span><\/p>\n

that leak what isn\u2019t there.<\/span><\/p>\n

After guzzling our beers,<\/span><\/p>\n

we all played a round of poker.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I folded and lost twenty,<\/span><\/p>\n

but my middle brother kept<\/span><\/p>\n

shooting his chances in the dark.<\/span><\/p>\n

I hug and wish him<\/span><\/p>\n

and his unlucky girl the best.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My oldest brother and I<\/span><\/p>\n

toast to the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Foaming mugs over<\/span><\/p>\n

a long conversation waiting to happen<\/span><\/p>\n

like I’m still his little man.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Only in my wishes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Up a few years,<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll reach 23, then 28,<\/span><\/p>\n

then I\u2019ll be older than the both of them<\/span><\/p>\n
