What Communication Studies Students Have to Say

“Before starting the Communication program at WOU, I really wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Since then, I’ve noticed how the content has guided me through life, making me a better person, for which I am thankful. The professors are incredible at what they do by engaging with students, creating a learning environment that makes the lessons understandable, and just over all caring.”  ’17, Emily Y., Gig Harbor, WA

“Communication Studies is a highly underrated major. Through my studies at WOU as a COMM major, I have learned so much valuable information, not only for my future career, but also to be an informed member of society. I have learned business skills and become a better public speaker. I have learned about technology and how it impacts communication. I have learned about women’s rhetoric roles in history, and so much more! It feels great to be studying a field that genuinely interests me and makes me more aware and thoughtful in everyday life. The skills and knowledge I have gained go far beyond the classroom and I’m so glad that I chose a major that could do that for me.”  ’18, Lauren Hebing, Mill City, OR

“There is so much that you can do with a communication degree, whether it is working with a large corporation or a small local business. The reason why you should be studying COMM is because it is something that everyone does every single day, if you are at work, home or wherever you might be. Being at WOU, you are given the opportunity to study communication as a whole unit: interpersonal, nonverbal, conflict resolution, intercultural and law. There are endless possibilities that you have with a communication degree. Take it from me because currently, I work for one of the largest companies in the world, Apple, Inc., and I am able to use my degree and the skills that I learned from professors at WOU.”  ’16, Kendall Rehn, Cupertino, CA, Apple, Inc.

“This degree has helped me learn invaluable professional and social communication skills that I will use forever. The intelligent, thought provoking debates and discussions in this field were the highlight of my degree. The professors have the knowledge, care, and desire to help you succeed. I would highly recommend Communication Studies at WOU to anyone who is looking for a degree in which they can truly grow as a communicator. ”  ’17, Sam Reed, Salem, OR

“In a fast paced world of media bombardment and ever-present social media, getting an understanding and awareness of the constant information and it’s construction is a huge boon.  The professors are very understanding and ready to help the students achieve their own success. I felt like a human being in each interaction with them, not as a face in the crowd of students, and each professor did well in making me feel recognized as an individual.”  ’16, Ian Schoen, Hillsboro, OR & Japan

“Choosing to study Communication at WOU was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. The professors care about all of their students, you won’t be just a number to them. They will go out of their way to help you succeed, not only at WOU, but with your life after WOU!”  ’17, Jackie Smith, Long Beach, WA, Pacific County Health Dept.

Aloha Kakou!

I have to admit that I didn’t choose this as a major my first year, or even my second or third year. The Communication program found its way to me.  I took my first communication class with Dr. Baldwin and I knew that I didn’t want to be anywhere else on campus but in this Communication Studies Program. The faculty and staff in the Communication Department really get to know their students and are all very approachable. I could meet with any one of them to answer any of my questions that I had regarding the department, classes, available resources on campus (like our Food Pantry) etc. There are so many Communication classes that I had to choose from and I never came across a class that I didn’t like. The skills and knowledge that you get from this Communication Studies program won’t only help you in your future job or career, but it will also teach you lots of communication strategies that you can use in any aspect of your everyday life. I want to say Mahalo Nui Loa to all the great faculty in the Communication Studies Department. If it wasn’t for their passion for Communication, I would not have had such a great experience getting my college degree.”  ’17 Nolan Arasato, Wai’anae, Hi, WOU Admissions
