The Campus Recreation Department host and co-sponsors a number of events, open activities through each term. Many open activities are set-up when no official programming is in progress yet the facility is open for “pick-up” games or individual participation. Each activity is free of charge for Peter Courtney Health and Wellness Center (HWC) members. Schedules vary according to the time of year and facility availability.

Please note the Events schedule is subject to change to accommodate reservations, holiday schedules, training periods and maintenance work.

Event Descriptions


In an effort to help make WOU´s campus more aware and safe, Campus Recreation and Campus Public Safety have teamed up to provide 3 separate FREE self-defense courses throughout the academic year. The self-defense course includes a classroom segment in addition to a hands-on workshop. The fall and spring courses are female only and the winter course is co-ed.

Registration: Pre-registration required at the front desk of the Peter Courtney Health and Wellness Center (HWC) prior to the course. Please call (8-9530) for more information. To expedite your registration process, please fill out the Activity Registration prior to your arrival at the HWC.

Dependents or partners (16 years or older) directly accompanied by a WOU student/staff/faculty may join our self-defense opportunities if space is available.

Pink Out

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Campus Recreation Department will be hosting a PINK OUT in the Health and Wellness Center. We want to encourage all our patrons and staff to wear pink.

Powder Puff Football

Powder Puff Football is a Homecoming event and an opportunity for WOU on-campus and off-campus female students to compete against each other in a flag football game.

Aquatic Exercise fitness challenge

Attend/complete any 3 Aquatic Exercise fitness classes to win a FREE t-shirt.

Show up at least 5 minutes before the scheduled class times to get a Fitness Card at the front desk of the Health and Wellness Center. We’ll keep track of your class attendance.

Water Volleyball

Come enjoy pick-up games of water volleyball in the swimming pool. The water volleyball net will be put up across the width of the swimming pool for you to play. Water volleyball is a great way to meet new people, get a good workout, and it’s a fun family activity.


Come enjoy pick-up games of volleyball on an HWC lower court on Sundays. The volleyball net will be set-up for you to play.

Badminton and Pickle Ball

Come enjoy pick-up games of badminton and pickleball on an HWC lower court on Saturdays. A badminton and pickleball net will be set-up for you to play.


Come enjoy pick-up games of Futsal in the HWC upper court during the winter term schedule. The Futsal goals will be set-up for you to play.

Worlds Largest Swim Lesson

Cost: FREE

What: Join us, along with kids and parents at aquatic facilities across the country and around the globe as we set a new Guinness World Record™ for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson ever conducted, to spread the word Swimming Lessons Save Lives!
