AQS students begin their academic career at WOU in Monmouth and establish a foundation in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Business before completing their career-specific training at OCCC in Newport.

At Western Oregon University, students take courses such as Introduction to Oceanography, Animal Behavior and Comparative Animal Physiology to learn about aquatic ecosystems and the organisms that inhabit them. Because many students will ultimately pursue careers at small public aquaria or at aquarium stores where they need to be able to manage business operations, not just the organisms under their care, Aquarium Science students also take courses such as Financial Accounting and Principles of Marketing.

At Oregon Coast Community College, students will gain hands-on experience at a one of a kind facility. The AQS curriculum at OCCC is widely recognized as one of the best programs in the country to learn aquatic animal husbandry. The Teaching Aquarium at OCCC includes aquarium systems designed to teach students how to work with jellyfish, live corals, elasmobranchs, temperate marine animals, and tropical marine animals. Please visit the OCCC Aquarium Science website to learn more about the opportunities at the OCCC campus.

The complete Aquarium Science curriculum can be found here: Aquarium Science, B.S.

If you have questions about the Aquarium Science, B.S., degree, please contact Dr. Michael Baltzley (baltzlem@wou.edu, 503-838-8832).

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

The Aquarium Science, B.S., degree is offered in conjunction with Oregon Coast Community College.
Students will complete their final year of coursework at OCCC in Newport, OR.

Aquarium Science major (118-120 credits)

Foundational Science courses (43-47)

BI 211, 212, 213 Principles of Biology (12)

CH 104 Chemistry and the Environment (4)

ES 106 Exploring the Oceans and Atmosphere (4)

ES 331 Introduction to Oceanography (3)

Choose one

MTH 110 Applied College Mathematics (4)

MTH 111 College Algebra (4)

Choose four

BI 317 Vertebrate Natural History (4)

BI 343 Analysis of Biological Data (4)

BI 360 Animal Behavior (4)

BI 361 Marine Ecology (5)

BI 451 Invertebrate Zoology (5)

BI 453 Marine Vertebrates (4)

Business and Entrepreneurship courses (22)

BA 211 Financial Accounting (4)

BA 310 Principles of Marketing (3)

BA 315 Financial Management (3)

BA 361 Organizational Behavior (3)

BA 362 Business Ethics (3)

BA 370 Business and Society (3)

ENT 350 Small Business Management (3)

Oregon Coast Community College Aquarium Science courses (53)

Formal admission to the AQS major is required to begin coursework at OCCC.
