One of the aspects of college life students tend to be most excited about is the dining options on campus. At WOU, we have several options for our student from a full-service cafeteria to coffee shops to food options in WUC, the student union. We want to give you an idea of what to expect when it comes to dining on campus.
If you live on campus, the majority of your meals will likely take place in Valsetz Dining Hall, so it’s important to know your way around the building. Valsetz serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is open substantially longer than other dining options on campus. If you’re looking for a burger, chicken strips, french fries, or other grilled/fried food, you can visit The Grill. There is typically a standard menu for the term, with weekly specials you can check out.
Across from The Grill, you’ll find both the pizza and pasta stations, as well as the bakery, where treats are baked fresh and in-house every day. The Homestyle station often serves specialty salads, sandwiches, and meats, while the Spotlight serves up burritos and taco bowls for lunch, with specialty items for dinner. There is also a sushi station, which is open weekdays and is prepared fresh by Valsetz’s own sushi chef. At The Deli, you can create your own sandwich, with your choice of bread, meat, cheese, and veggies. Near The Deli you’ll find the soup station, which often includes two choices of fresh made soup.
Valsetz offers a large salad bar, where you can create your own unique salad or try one of the prepared cold salads. Valsetz also allows you to choose a bowl of fresh veggies and have an employee stir-fry them for you, with your choice of protein, sauce, and rice. As well, a waffle bar is open all day, and offers a wide array of toppings, like syrup, whipped cream, and fresh fruit.
If you’re looking for gluten-free options, most stations in Valsetz offer a gluten-free option, and you can check with the staff if you’re unsure of an item’s gluten content. Likewise, Valsetz has a dedicated vegan station, where you can find completely vegan and gluten-free items.
The menu to some of these stations are subject to change, so if you want to plan your meals ahead of time, you can check out the weekly Valsetz menu on the WOU website.
Also, you can grab coffee. Valsetz serves Pastega coffee.
This coffee shop also has a grab-and-go market and is located in Werner University Center. Swing by on the way to class and grab coffee and a hot breakfast sandwich, or come at lunch for some pre-packaged items in the refrigerated area. The lines can get long in the 10 minutes before the hour during the day when everyone is transferring between classes. Give yourself extra time if you can. Caffe Allegro serves Portland Roasting Coffee.
If you’re studying hard down in the library and need a snack break or coffee, pop over to The Press on the first floor. You’ll find baked goods and some pre-packaged foods. This is where you can get Starbucks coffee on campus.
The Wolf Grill
Located in WUC, this is where to get hot food (other than Valsetz). The Wolf Grill is your home for burgers, fries, quesadillas, grilled paninis, hot breakfasts, and more. Check the dining website for hours because it’s not open all day or evening.
This is next to The Wolf Grill in WUC and is a great place to grab a salad, burrito bowl (try mixing the cilantro-lime and the curry dressing, yum!), or sandwich. The Wolf Deli is open similar hours to The Wolf Grill.
