Starting in October 2010, the Western Oregon University campus has a new Web-based, commercial, educational radio station. The station is a student-managed and operated entity with mentoring from the student media advisor.
The station’s mission is to strive for accurate, fair, and unbiased coverage of news, culture and sports topics on campus, and providing the college community with quality music. The benefits of working at this station are numerous, be it the chance to gain much-needed broadcasting/communication experience, or simply to be a part of a media service that aims to inform peers of issues that will face them. The station’s stakeholders are the WOU students, administration, staff, and faculty, as well as listeners in the Monmouth-Independence-Dallas areas.
The Radio/TV Station Subcommittee, which was formed in the fall of 2009, hopes that in the long term the station will be able to obtain an AM-FM license from the FCC, expand the radio studio space, and purchase air space to complement the existing Web-based operations.
