Youth Access Guidelines

The Health and Wellness Center seeks to enhance engagement within campus by building healthy and supportive recreation and leisure opportunities.


Youth Access Hours For the safety of all participants, youth participation in the Health and Wellness Center, Aquatic Center and Climbing Wall are limited to the following specific hours and activities:

Youth Daily Pass

  • Members may sponsor up to 2 adult guests and up to 4 youths to join them in the facilities per day. See Membership for adult guest policies.
  • Age and supervision requirements are listed below for the Health and Wellness Center, Aquatic Center and Climbing Wall.

Health and Wellness Center The following supervision limits and guidelines for the Health and Wellness Center will be strictly enforced:

Age Requirements:

Ages 0-7

  • May only participate in the Aquatic Center during open swim times and must be accompanied in the water by a participating adult at all times.

Ages 8-15

  • Must be accompanied by a participating WOU Community adult at all times.
  • May only participate in youth swimming, youth climbing, individual sports such as badminton, racquetball, tennis, and non-structured basketball or volleyball games during Youth Access Hours.
  • May not use the weight room, cardio equipment, speed bag room and mechanical or combative equipment.

Ages 16 and 17

  • May use the facilities unaccompanied by a WOU Community adult with a current HWC Dependent 16-17 membership.
  • May use all facilities during open hours during the academic year and breaks.
  • Are not eligible for most services, programs, trips or classes with the exception of specifically designed, age-appropriate programs.

Aquatic Center The following supervision limits and guidelines for the Aquatic Center will be strictly enforced:

Age Requirements:

Ages 0-7

  • May only participate during open swim times and must be accompanied in the water by a participating adult at all times.

Ages 8-15

  • May participate in open swim and lap swim hours (must be swimming laps) with an adult directly observing the swimmers at all times.

Supervision Requirements:

Non-swimmers

  • If a youth is not able to move in the water without feet touching the bottom or needs to wear a Coast Guard approved life-jacket, the youth is considered a non-swimmer.
  • Only three non-swimmers are allowed per adult and the adult must be in the water within arm’s reach of the non-swimmers.
  • Non-swimmers are not to enter the deep end of the lap pool.

Swimmers

  • If a patron is able to move in the water without feet touching the bottom, the patron is considered a swimmer.
  • Only five swimmers per adult and the adult must directly observe the swimmers at all times.
  • A swim test is required to enter the deep end of the lap pool.

Attire Requirements:

  • Infants and toddlers must wear plastic swim diapers to enter the pool.
  • All patrons (including infants and toddlers) must utilize the locker rooms or the individual family changing rooms to alter attire.

 

Climbing Wall The following supervision limits and guidelines for the Climbing Wall will be strictly enforced:

Age Requirements:

Age 8-11

  • May only participate in bouldering during youth climbing hours.
  • Must be accompanied by a participating WOU Community adult at all times.
  • The WOU Community adult must be boulder-certified at the HWC and participate with the child on all climbs.

Age 12-15

  • May participate in bouldering and climbing during youth climbing hours.
  • Must be accompanied by a participating WOU Community adult at all times.
  • May participate in a belay certification course if their waist is over 23.5” and the climbing harness fits securely.
  • The WOU Community adult must be boulder-certified and/or belay-certified in the HWC and participate with the child on all climbs.

Supervision Requirements:

  • Youth ages 8-15 years must have an adult sign a waiver on a yearly basis to obtain access to the climbing/bouldering wall.
  • Youth at the Climbing Wall must be under control of the WOU Community supervising adult when not climbing.
  • Only two children per WOU Community adult.
