Dr. Gerald Leinwand came to Oregon College of Education from Baruch
College in New York City, where he was the Dean of Education. At OCE,
he saw an opportunity for change and great potential in a school that
had education and liberal arts in the curriculum. Leinwand received his
Bachelor of Arts degree from the New York University in 1941, his Masters
degree from Columbia University in 1945 and his Doctorate from New York University
in 1963.
When he arrived at Oregon College of Education in 1977, he had many great
ideas for the college. He even changed the name of the school to Western
Oregon State College in 1981 to make it more than just an education college.
The constant fight for funding and enrollment was tiring and, in 1982,
after five years as president, Leinwand retired from WOSC and returned
to New York City.
