Dr. Henry Gunn was born in Kentucky in July of 1898. After
serving as a Navy sailor in World War I, he attended the Oregon Normal
School (ONS) in Monmouth, Oregon. Gunn completed his schooling, and earned
an Education degree in 1923. After graduation, Gunn moved to Umatilla, Oregon, where he began teaching
and coaching at Umatilla High School. By 1933, Gunn had moved to Portland
where he was assistant principal and, later, principal of Lincoln High
School. Gunn remained at Lincoln High School until 1940, when he was appointed
to Superintendent of Portland Schools. He held this position until 1944,
when Gunn accepted the same position in the Eugene School District. Between
1933 and 1944, Gunn received his Masters at the University of Oregon and
his Doctorate at Stanford University.
In 1947, Dr. Gunn returned to the campus in Monmouth as the Oregon College
of Education (OCE) president. During Dr. Gunn's tenure there was a noticeable increase in school
enrollment, a new library (now known as APS) built on campus, and additions
to the north end of the Campus Elementary School building (now known as
ITC). By 1950, Dr. Gunn was ready for a change, and accepted a position
at Palo Alto School District in California as superintendent. Dr. Gunn
would remain at this job until his retirement. In 1961, he was awarded
the Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of School
Administrators.
Dr. Henry Gunn died in his home in California in December of 1988 at
the age of 90.
